After trying a number of products i finally arrived at odorless mineral spirits. Try to take up the adhesive with the tile instead of just breaking it off. The tile should pop off easily leaving the glue in place. The old sticky residue melted away instantly leaving an oily sheen behind but without apparent damage to the underlying tile.

However on a dirty floor you must change clean water sometimes. Remember that the sticky residue can act as a glue which readily combines with dirt and dust to generate stickiness so do the rinsing process carefully.
